CANCELLATION OF OCTOBER 9 DINNER DANCE

The Ocean Ridge Charities Association (ORCA) regretfully announces the cancellation of its October 9 dinner dance at the Plantation Club, due to the COVID Delta variant.

While many residents have been fully vaccinated, the risk of passing along the infection, including breakthrough infections, is too great to risk the health of Ocean Ridgers and their families and friends.

ORCA will reschedule this event at a later date.

A Little Bit Country/A Little Bit Rock and Roll

It was a little bit rock and roll, a little bit county and a whole lot of generosity at the ORCA Annual Dinner Dance for Charity held on May 19.  Guests Donna and Gary Phelps, ministers of Brunswick County StreetReach, Inc. took the microphone for a few minutes and shared the startling facts surrounding the homelessness and the many people who are being strangled by the powerful tentacles of opioid addiction right here at our back door.  The numbers are staggering – individuals, families, children….

This event was organized for two-fold purposes - to educate and raise awareness about poverty-related problems in Brunswick County and to provide a community-wide social activity for all to enjoy.  Well, thanks to our very own Opportunity Rocks band, the dance flooring was hopping all night, to Dickies of North Myrtle Beach who catered the event and, most importantly, to the residents who attended and helped ORCA to raise almost $3,400 for the three charities of the night - StreetReach, Brunswick Homeless Coalition and the Veterans Welcome Home.

The night was a huge success on all fronts!

ORCA 2018 Make A Difference Day – Helping Hands for the Homeless

With this new-found awareness, the ORCA M.A.D.D. committee is going to continue their outreach to the charities who work with aiding the homeless and disadvantaged children.  So be sure to check out the ORCA website for detailed information regarding the items being collected and also keep an eye out for ORMA online emails.

OPPORTUNITY ROCKS

Saturday, January 14, 2017

Opportunity Rocks “rocked” the Plantation Club once again to a packed house of about 120 Ocean Ridge residents!  On Saturday, January 14th, Ocean Ridge Charities Association, Inc. (ORCA) hosted the Annual Dinner Dance and Opportunity Rocks had the dance floor hopping.  Attendees enjoyed a BBQ buffet provided by Dickey’s Barbeque out of North Myrtle Beach.  Folks gave generously towards a 50/50, totaling $650, of which half went to drawing winner Christine Crossley, a guest of Karen and Gary Williston.

All enjoyed a great time.  Importantly, the event generated approximately $2,500 for two very deserving charities: Brunswick Homeless Coalition and Brunswick County SteetReach

  • BCHC had its beginning Nov. 2011. Today they have about 25 members who have a passion to help the homeless and those in need residing in Brunswick County. They are a 501 (C) (3) nonprofit organization.  BCHC’s mission is to serve as an advocate for the homeless and those in need by increasing awareness and educating residents in Brunswick County.

  • StreetReach’s mission is to bring awareness to the homeless issue in our county, to advocate and fight for justice, to show compassion and mercy by assisting the homeless. Low-income families are provided with access to the resources they desperately need through this vital program, including emergency food boxes, clothing, hygiene products, referral assistance, community-based events, warm coats, back-to-school supplies, mentoring, Bible studies and life skills training.

The ORCA Board would like to thank all of the Ocean Ridge residents who attended and then helped clean up and move furniture after the event.  We hope everyone had a wonderful time and know that we appreciate your support in our mission to serve the neediest in Brunswick County.

On Saturday, January 23rd, Ocean Ridge Charities Association Inc. (ORCA) hosted its Annual Dinner Dance.  This year, it was held at the Plantation Club and featured the home grown and becoming quite famous band made up of Ocean Ridge residents, Opportunity Rocks.

In case you don’t know them, they are Laurie White (lead female singer), George Briggs (lead male singer), Karen Nelson (rhythm guitar and vocals), Mike Lebkicher (rhythm guitar), Hugh Carano (bass guitar), Rob Edwards (lead guitar), Dale Hackman (drums), and Dennis Covelli (keyboard).

It was a full house of Ocean Ridge residents, with a very fitting ‘A Snowy Night in the South’ theme.

The band played 4 sets, entertaining the crowd from 6PM until 10PM.  Their songs included ‘Crocodile Rock’, which got the crowd up and filling the dance floor, and a beautiful and romantic rendition of ‘At this Moment’ by Laurie.

Attendees were raving about the food, which was provided by Dickey’s Barbeque out of North Myrtle Beach.  Folks gave generously towards a 50/50, totally $840, that was won by Deb and Ron Sisk.

A great time was had by all. Importantly, the event generated approximately $2,800 that is being given to 2 very deserving charities:

Brunswick Homeless Coalition

StreetReach

Mike's Garage Band

Mike's Garage Band is a local group that plays gratis for a number of charity events in the area.  We are lucky to have them and enjoy their performances whenever and wherever we see them.

On January 30, one hundred and thirty-six Ocean Ridge Plantation residents danced to the music played by Mike’s Garage Band at the Calabash Elks Club.  There were 50/50 drawings for prizes and a dancing contest.

And best of all, this fun event was for a great cause.  Ocean Ridge Charities Association (ORCA) organized the fundraiser for the Brunswick Family Assistance.  The deal was sweetened when Brunswick Electric agreed to match the total amount raised that evening.

ORCA members, Barbara Ellenberger and Mike Cunningham, delivered a check for $2,500 to the Brunswick Electric Company.

They matched the amount and forwarded $5,000 to Brunswick Family Assistance.

'Spring Into Summer'

In 2014, we were able to book

Mike's Garage Band for the first time for an ORCA event, held in June.  It was well attended, and we were able to raise over $1,000 for the

Brunswick Family Assistance Agency.

Here are some photos from the event.  Thank you for your support and we hope you can join us next time.

Enjoy!!!
