Days of Service

2020

Computer4Kids

Computers 4 Kids are in urgent need of Laptops, Chrome-Books, tablets, or all-in-one computers. To enable distance learning, ideally, these devices would have cameras and speakers. Having said that, any computer that supports Windows 7 or beyond would be valuable. If you can donate computer equipment, please email George Briggs, briggsghb@aol.com, by Saturday, September 12, who will come and collect them from you.

Please note that C4K has been refurbishing computers for kids since 2006. They are a Microsoft certified refurbisher. The first step in their process is to wipe clean the hard drive. If you prefer to have your hard drive removed and returned to you, then this can be arranged. It would, however, still require that your computer be collected. Please contact George to discuss this further.

Wow!  Once again Ocean Ridge turned out in force to help those in need here in Brunswick County.  On September 14th, Ocean Ridge Charities Association (ORCA), our neighborhood charity, held a drive to benefit Brunswick County Computers 4 Kids.  Neighbors very generously donated over 30 desktops, 40 laptops, 22 monitors, multiple smartphones, and so much more.  The total value is conservatively appraised at over $10,000.

Computers 4 Kids reconditions and updates donated PCs and gives them to needy students in the county who do not have home computers.  They recently donated their 3,000th system.  In today's society, it's important for each child to have access to a computer.  And many Ocean Ridge residents were delighted that old equipment, that's just been gathering dust around the house, can be used for such a good cause.

Doug Koontz, the president of Computers 4 Kids, said he greatly appreciates ORCA's generous financial contributions over the years.  And he is thrilled with all the great donations they received in September.  These items will really make a big difference here in Brunswick County.  Thank you for your continuing support of ORCA and such a worthwhile cause!

Reading & Helping Kids with Homework

September 24 - 25, 2019

4:00PM - 6:00PM

Girl with Teacher

Ocean Ridge Charities Association Inc. (ORCA) has scheduled a "Day of Service" for Communities in Schools (CIS), a "Reading and Helping Kids with Homework" event, on September 24 and 25, 4-6 p.m., at Supply Elementary School, 51 Benton Road SE, Supply NC 28462.

Here are additional details:

Participants - Our goal is 8 Ocean Ridge volunteers for each of the 2 days. Let us know how many days you wish to volunteer. If we get 16 volunteers, we will limit individual participation to one day only.

Background check - Each volunteer must complete a background check that should take CIS a few days to process. Complete the background check application BY DOWNLOADING A PAPER COPY at https://cisbrunswick.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/Background-Check-Form-12-1-14.pdf, FILLING IT OUT, AND MAILING IT TO Drew Jordan, Success Coach, Supply Elementary School, Communities In Schools of Brunswick County, 51 Benton Rd SE, Supply NC 28462. Call Drew if any questions about the form at 910-754-7644, ext. 2148 (office), or 910-712-1546 (cell). You are not able to fill out the background check form online, as it is one document uploaded, and it would alter the document for everyone who uses the link. CIS requires receipt of an original, handwritten copy to keep on file for audit purposes.

Register at SignUpGenius at link below - after you fill out and mail the background check form, so that ORCA knows how many residents are signing up. Choose which day(s) you prefer.

For more information, contact George Briggs at briggsghb@aol.com or Pris Lovell at prislovell@gmail.com
