ORCA Wine Dinner @ Angelo's

Monday, February 22, 2016 6:30PM

Angelo's Bistro & Pizzeria

Angelo's Bistro & Pizzeria, a local Shallotte landmark and award winning restaurant, holds a wine dinner each month.  They do so to not only provide an evening of fine wines and foods to its guest, but also to raise money for charities in our community. ORCA sponsored the most recent wine dinner, held on Monday, February 22, where a number of Ocean Ridge residents were among the 90 who took part in the festivities. Proceeds from the event totaled $500, which ORCA will donate to one of the Brunswick County charities it supports.

It was a fabulous evening.  The focus was on wines from the Monte Della Vigne Winery, presented by Rusty Petrea, a wine importer and expert in Italian wines.  These wine dinners are not only fun evenings for a good cause, but are usually an educational ones.  This did not disappoint. Rusty began the evening by talking about the Parma region, known widely for its namesake cheese and ham, but also famous for its sparkling wines, which were the stars of the evening.

The food and wine were very well paired.  The menu began with a very light Parmesano Flan, accompanied by a flute of dry, sparkling Malvasia Selezione Colli di Parma.  It was followed by a creamy mushroom risotto, with hints of spicy fennel sausage that came alongside a dry, sparkling Lambrusco. The Lasagna was next.  It was creamy, with house-made noodles, and was served with a Rosso, a dry red blend.  The meat course was a prosciutto and Parmesan stuffed beef tenderloin, with asparagus and a rosette of prosciutto.  This course was complimented by a bold Argille. And who could resist dessert.  It was a warm panettone sweet Italian bread pudding, filled with citron and currents, and topped with custard.  This fabulous dessert was paired with a light, sparkling Malvasia sweet dessert wine, sporting hints of peach and orange.

The tables were set impeccably and the kitchen and wait staff could not have done a better job at delivering on the goods. All in all, it was excellent evening of good food, good friends, good wine and all for a good cause.

ORCA would like to thank the Angelo’s for hosting and for the many Ocean Ridge residents who attended.
